DRIVING A HEAVY VEHICLE

Class I and 3 licence

The heavy vehicle drivers are professional road users. They must behave responsibly and safely. They have to make daily decisions quickly and deal with situation of danger.
They must acquire uncommon knowledge and driving skills to well perform a complex task. This is why they need to develop knowledge and abilities out of ordinary. They must also be aware of the laws and regulations governing road transport.

Conditions to obtain a Class 1 licence:

  • Have less than 4 points demerit points on your driving record.
  • Not have incurred any suspension or revocation of your driver’s license during the last two years in conjunction with the Criminal Code. This includes an accumulation of demerit points.
  • Pass the Visual test delivered by the RAMQ.
  • Pass a standard physical exam and present the report to the RAMQ.
  • Pass a theoretical exam.
  • Must hold a class 5 permit (standard license) for a minimum of at least 36 months.

For new residents of Quebec, the SAAQ recognizes Class 1 permits from certain countries. For information regarding the validity of a Class 1 permit from your native country, please check with the SAAQ.

Steps to follow to obtain the Class 1 licence

Theoritical Training

  • Introduction to Class 1 heavy vehicles and their specifications
  • The transport of dangerous goods
  • The road signs
  • The natural laws of physics
  • The imponderable and emergency situations
  • The vision and visual field
  • Driving adaptation in difficult road and traffic conditions
  • Inspection before departure
  • Basic knowledge on vehicle mechanics (pneumatic and hydraulic)
  • The eco energetic driving

Practical Training

  • Vehicular Inspection
  • Gear changes (upshift and downshift)
  • The double clutch
  • Usage of the pneumatic brakes
  • The difficult situations of winter driving
  • The braking in emergency situations
  • The progressive change of gears on slope
  • Parking
  • Turns
  • Driving in urban and rural roads
  • Backing up
  • Accessing expressways
  • Evaluation and simulation of practice examination

  • Must hold a class 5 permit (standard license) for a minimum of at least 24 months.

  • Succeed the Class 3 road test as well as the test procedures of technical inspections at the SAAQ.

Attention : A Class 3 licence authorises its holder to drive all other types of vehicle except for road vehicles covered by Class 1, Class 2 and motorcycles.
